Academic Renewal

Return to Academic Regulations & Enrollment

The Trustees of the California State University have established a program of academic renewal. Students having difficulty meeting graduation requirements due to a grade point deficiency may petition to have up to two semesters or three quarters of previous college work discounted from all considerations associated with requirements for the baccalaureate degree. Academic renewal is intended only to facilitate graduation from Cal Poly Humboldt; it does not apply to individuals who already possess a baccalaureate degree or who meet graduation requirements without the approval of a petition for academic renewal.

Eligibility Requirements

Students must meet all the conditions established by the Trustees to qualify for academic renewal. This policy can only be applied if a student has met all graduation requirements except GPA and:

  1. present evidence in the petition that the coursework to be disregarded was, due to extenuating circumstances, substandard and not representative of the student’s present scholastic ability and level of performance.
  2. present evidence that if the petition is denied, the student will have to enroll in additional coursework involving one or more additional terms to qualify for the degree. Include the specific coursework or requirements involved.
  3. five years must have elapsed since the term or terms to be disregarded. Terms taken at any institution may be disregarded.
  4. since completing the term(s) to be disregarded, the student must have completed at least one of the following in regard to Cal Poly Humboldt  coursework: 15 semester units with at least a 3.0 GPA; 30 semester units with at least a 2.5 GPA; 45 semester units with at least a 2.0 GPA
  5. the student’s grade point average remains below 2.0 for the major, Cal Poly Humboldt, or overall.

Students who believe they are eligible should complete a Petition for Exception to University Policy web-form through the Office of the Registrar.
