2023-2024 Cal Poly Humboldt Catalog

U.S. and California Government

The following courses meet both U.S. government and California state and local government requirements.*

U.S. Government Notes:

A student who has earned credit for a course on US Government via an AP exam, CLEP exam, or at a university outside of California will have met the US Government portion of this requirement, but not the “California state and local government” requirement. In this case, a student may enroll in PSCI 160 - California Institutions , a 1-unit CR/NC course that meets only this portion of the requirement.

All-University requirements cannot be waived and other Cal Poly Humboldt courses cannot be substituted for approved American Institutions courses. To fulfill these requirements, a course must be completed during the academic year in which its All-University status is designated in the catalog.

Students in the Environmental Resources Engineering program should refer to the ERE program description for this area of general education

Goals

Students taking US and California Government courses study

  • the political philosophies of the framers of the Constitution and the nature and operation of United States political institutions and processes under that Constitution as amended and interpreted;
  • the rights and obligations of citizens in the political system established under the Constitution;
  • the Constitution of the state of California within the framework of evolution of federal-state relations and the nature and processes of state and local government under that Constitution; and
  • contemporary relationships of state and local government with the federal government, the resolution of conflicts and the establishment of cooperative processes under the constitutions of both the state and nation, and the political processes involved.
