The art studio concentration helps students develop the strong conceptual ability and technical foundation required of professionals in all their endeavors. We recognize the broader role of art in today’s increasingly visual culture. Our graduates must be leaders in that society with independence of mind, spirited curiosity, and a sense of art’s important connection to a rapidly changing world.
Our program offers courses in painting, ceramics, drawing, digital media, jewelry and metalsmithing, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. We provide large and well-equipped studio facilities (including computer labs), small classes with individual attention, and a faculty of artists who remain active in their own creative pursuits.
The upper division component is tailored to each student’s individual studio emphasis. Through problem-solving assignments and accompanying instruction, students learn processes and strategies for creating works of art in various media. By concentrating on a particular studio area in depth, students can prepare a portfolio for further professional opportunities or for postgraduate study.
We have two galleries on campus. The Reese Bullen gallery sponsors exhibitions of works by professional artists that are relevant to areas of instruction. The Reese Bullen gallery also presents an annual exhibition of student art. The Goudi’ni Native American Arts Gallery highlights the work of contemporary and traditional Native American artists. The Student Access Gallery Club, a student-run organization, curates and exhibits student work in venues around campus.
Our graduates have gone on to a wide variety of arts related careers, including work as professional graphic artists, web designers, painters, commercial jewelers, photographers, illustrators and ceramicists as well as art teachers, art directors, museum and gallery professionals and art administrators.
Preparation: In high school take as many art courses as possible in a variety of areas.
