Early Childhood Development Minor

This minor provides a background in the development of children from birth through age eight with a focus on four interrelated areas. The minor is useful to those wishing to work with children and families.

Requirements for the Minor (15 Units)

Growth & Development

Complete two of the following courses. Note: Completion of one of these courses is a prerequisite to all other courses in the minor.

CD 253 - Prenatal and Infant Development Units: 3
CD 255 - Early Childhood Development Units: 3
CD 350 - Perspectives: Life-Span Development Units: 3

Guidance & Discipline

Complete one course.

CD 257 - Supervised Work with Children I Units: 4
CD 354 - Methods of Observation Units: 3

Special Needs of Children

Complete one course.

CD 362 - Children and Stress Units: 3
CD 366 - Exceptional Children and Their Families Units: 3
CD 464 - Atypical Child Development Units: 3

Family Relations

Complete one course.

CD 251 - Children, Families and Their Communities Units: 3
CD 352 - Parent/Child Relationships Units: 3
CD 467 - Working with Culturally Diverse Families Units: 3

Child Development Permit

Students who minor in early childhood development may wish to explore requirements for the Child Development Permit, issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing and required for teaching preschool children in state and federally funded programs in California.
