2023-2024 Cal Poly Humboldt Catalog [ARCHIVED CATALOG]

Geospatial Science and Technology, Environmental Science and Management Concentration, B.S.

Geospatial information and methods are key to solving some of the world’s greatest challenges including climate change, poverty, hunger, social injustice, and having safe and healthy places for everyone to live. They are also critical to solving local problems of sea-level rise, emergency preparedness, and providing health services. The size and complexity of the data involved are second only to genetics data. The data and methods involved require experts that are trained in geospatial skills and how to apply these skills to other disciplines.

Students will obtain a strong geospatial foundation, and then further develop their skills in either an environmental or social science pathway. Graduates should find employment as Geographic Information System (GIS) analysts and specialists, remote sensing analysts, cartographers, photogrammetrists, and geographers in the public and private sectors, or be well-prepared to continue on to graduate programs.

Please note that Cal Poly Humboldt also offers a major in Environmental Science and Management with a Geospatial Concentration which provides an increased emphasis on environmental science and management topics in exchange for less depth in geospatial science.

Prerequisite Course (0-3 Units)

  • Units: 3
  • or equivalent, or demonstrated facility with college algebra through successful completion of pre-calculus at the high school level, or by placement test.

Program Learning Outcomes

Program Learning Outcomes identify what a student will learn or be able to do upon completion of their program.

  1. Apply geospatial information and technology to understanding the spatial and temporal aspects of social and equity issues and create potential approaches to improving these issues.
  2. Analyze human impacts on the physical, biological, and/or cultural world, and develop and implement geospatial projects.
  3. Seek out original and secondary sources of spatial and aspatial information necessary to understand complex environmental and social issues.
  4. Use critical thinking skills and apply measurable criteria to evaluate contemporary spatial decision-making
  5. Communicate with the public and professionals concerning environmental and social issues.
  6. Create professional maps, posters, reports, and articles containing a variety of spatial and aspatial information.
