Linguistics Minor

Faculty are drawn from several departments for an interdisciplinary, integrated program of study. Participants analyze language in all its aspects.

Linguistics students find they have a background for careers requiring both written and spoken communication skills. Potential careers: linguist, translator, interpreter, advertising specialist, writer, intelligence specialist, speech/language pathologist, speech writer, materials developer, editor, and ESL teacher. This minor also provides a background for students wanting to do graduate work in linguistics, modern languages, or a social science.

Requirements for the Minor (19 Units)

ENGL 225 - Linguistic Diversity and Language Analysis Units: 4
or

Philosophical & Anthropological Approaches

Complete one course.

ANTH 340 - Language and Culture Units: 4
PHIL 100 - Logic Units: 3
PHIL 485 - Seminar in Philosophy Units: 3 [topic: Philosophy of Language]

Language Development

Complete one course.

ENGL 417 - Second Language Acquisition Units: 3
ENGL 328 - Structure of American English Units: 4
ENGL 325 - History of English as a Global Language Units: 4

Language Study

Complete one year of a language other than English at the university level (6-10 units).

Complete one additional elective course.

FREN 311 - French V and Stories from the Francophone World Units: 4
SPAN 311 - Spanish Level V, Advanced Grammar and Composition Units: 4
other language course with advisor approval

Culminating Phase

Select course in consultation with advisor.
