Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language Minor

Requirements for the Minor (20 Units)

This coursework develops and refines skills necessary in teaching English as a second / foreign language (in the US, foreign schools, and language institutes). To prepare for this minor, take high school or community college courses in English, languages other than English, and ethnic studies.

Required Courses (10 Units)

• ENGL 417 - Second Language Acquisition Units: 3
• ENGL 435 - English as a Second/Foreign Language Units: 4
• ENGL 436 - Career Preparation for Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language Units: 4

Elective Courses (4 Units)

• ENGL 327 - Linguistic Diversity and Language Analysis Units: 4

• or

• ENGL 328 - Structure of American English Units: 4

Language Requirements (6 Units)

Complete 6 semester units of a language other than English taken at the university level or at an intensive language program.
