Place-Based Learning Communities (PBLCs)

A signature component of a Cal Poly Humboldt education is the use of Place-Based Learning Communities (PBLCs) to onboard first-year students and support the transition to Humboldt as the place they come to learn, grow, and build community. Students are grouped together by major and/or interest to learn as a cohort through hands-on, real world experiences related to the environment, peoples, cultures, and traditions of our region. This approach to education helps students develop stronger ties to our campus and off-campus communities, enhances students’ appreciation for the natural world and its diverse peoples, and creates a heightened commitment to serving communities as active, contributing citizens. The PBLCs serve as a link between resources across campus, connecting students to academic support services and educational experiences as students navigate their first year at Humboldt in their specific field of interest.
