Program Upper Division GE Area 2/5 Modifications


The following majors have Upper Division GE Area 2/5 requirements incorporated into the major requirements: Chemistry, Environmental Resources Engineering, Fisheries Biology, Kinesiology, Oceanography, Physics.

Students can also satisfy 3 units of Upper Division GE Area 2/5 by completing an approved minor in one of the disciplines in the College of Natural Resources and Sciences. A minor cannot be awarded to a student receiving a related major of the same name.

GE Notes


GE requirements cannot be waived and other Cal Poly Humboldt courses cannot be substituted for approved GE courses. To fulfill a particular requirement, a course must be completed during the academic year in which the GE status is designated in the catalog. Courses that meet outcomes of more than one GE area 1-6, may only be used to satisfy one of those areas.

Goals


Area 2/5: Mathematics or Sciences: These courses will expand on the content delivered in lower-division Area 2 and 5 courses, by focusing on either or both of the following areas:

  1. Physical or Biological Science - these courses will guide students to accomplish the following content criteria:
    • develop knowledge of scientific theories, concepts, and data about living and/or non-living systems; 
    • achieve an understanding and appreciation of scientific principles and the scientific method; and
    • achieve an understanding and appreciation of the potential limits of scientific endeavors and the value systems and ethics associated with human inquiry. 
  2. Mathematical Concepts and Quantitative Reasoning - these courses will guide students to accomplish the following content criteria:
    • reason quantitatively;
    • practice computational skills; and
    • explain and apply mathematical or quantitative reasoning concepts to solve problems.
