Linguistics Minor

Faculty are drawn from several departments for an interdisciplinary, integrated program of study. Participants analyze language in all its aspects.
Linguistics students find they have a background for careers requiring both written and spoken communication skills. Potential careers: linguist, translator, interpreter, advertising specialist, writer, intelligence specialist, speech/language pathologist, speech writer, materials developer, editor, and ESL teacher. This minor also provides a background for students wanting to do graduate work in linguistics, modern languages, or a social sciences.
Learning outcomes:
- Students will become familiar with the description of structural aspects of language (phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics).
- Students will be able to analyze the relationship between language and culture/society.

Linguistics Minor (12-24 Units)
The minor consists of one core course plus an additional 9-12 units selected from the approved electives list. Students in the minor must complete one year of a language other than English at the college level. Core Courses (3-4 Units)
Choose one of the following courses. These courses address how language operates structurally. Topics include syntax, phonetics, sylistics, pragmatics, and sociolinguistics. Electives (9-12 units)
Choose at least 9 units of coursework from this list. Courses address the interaction of language, culture, and societies. Includes theories of colonization and language. Courses also address how languages change as they move across time and place. Language Study (0-8 units)
Complete one year of a language other than English taken at the college level, or equivalent competency. |
