Liberal Studies (Child Development/Elementary Education) B.A.

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Colleges & Departments

The Liberal Studies, B.A. has a core set of courses that focus on 21st century teaching approaches and emphasize the traditional disciplines taught in elementary schools. All students start out in one of the non-integrated concentrations and may be admitted to the integrated credential concentration in their junior or senior year if they meet all admission requirements. The Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP) is a combined 4-year bachelor’s degree and credential program for students pursuing a teaching credential. It allows students to receive their bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies, as well as their preliminary credential. Because the Liberal Studies teacher preparation emphases prepare students for a state licensed credential, requirements may be changed by state mandate at any time. The Liberal Studies concentrations meet the California Subject Matter Requirement for a multiple subject teaching credential.

  • The Child Development/ Elementary Education Concentration (120 total units) is designed for students who wish to become elementary school teachers in grades K-6. Students take courses in traditional disciplines taught in elementary schools alongside courses focusing on developmental characteristics of children.
  • Child Development/ Elementary Education (ITEP) Concentration (135 total units) allows undergraduate students to earn a bachelor’s degree, and to be recommended for a preliminary Special Education (i.e. Education Specialist) credential in four years.

Requirements for the Bachelor’s Degree

A bachelor’s degree requires a total of 120 units. Students must fulfill General Education & All-University Requirements , residency, unit, and GPA requirements as outlined in the Bachelor’s Degree Requirements .
