GEAR is Cal Poly Humboldt’s General Education and All-University Requirements program. This program includes the courses that all undergraduate students take in English composition, critical thinking, speech communication, mathematical concepts and quantitative reasoning, arts and humanities, social and behavioral sciences, physical or biological sciences, and ethnic studies. It also includes three all-university requirements - American Institutions (AI); Diversity and Common Ground (DCG); and the CSU’s Graduate Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR).
Each academic department on the Cal Poly Humboldt campus produces graduates who are developing experts in their field. It is the GEAR program that produces graduates who are well-rounded in their knowledge, adaptable in their perspective, and flexibly prepared to address the complex (multidisciplinary and multiperspectival) challenges - social, environmental, and otherwise - that they will face in their lives.
The purpose of the GEAR program at Cal Poly Humboldt is to cultivate a broad array of foundational skills, multiple forms of disciplinary knowledge, and diverse perspectives essential for success both to university students and to lifelong learners. Students who seek to “improve the global human condition and our relationship with the environment” will find in the GEAR program a commitment across disciplines to provide breadth and to prepare them for their own chosen futures.
Students, you will find all GEAR areas described below. All students must complete the same requirements, but there are many ways to do that. Completing the GEAR program requires 48 units of coursework. Work with your advisors - early and often - to determine the best path for you through Humboldt GEAR.
